      Frequently asked questions

      Do I need experience?
      Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowDown Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowUp
      • No experience is needed! We provide full training in kitchen skills, food hygiene, front-of-house, and barista work.

      • There’s always a paid chef, barista, and Kitchen Porter on shift to support you, plus someone managing the front of house.

      • If you already have experience or love cooking/baking, that’s a bonus—but not expected.

      • No need to worry about handling cash—our systems are electronic (like an iPad), so it’s super simple.

      • For your first few shifts, we’ll buddy you up with an experienced female volunteer to help you settle in.
      Who volunteers at Braw Tea?
      Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowDown Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowUp
      • Our volunteers are women aged 17+ who are based in and around Dundee.
      • Sometimes we have a waitlist to keep a good balance of ages, backgrounds, and experiences.

      • We also welcome volunteers through referrals from our partner organisations.

      • Right now, we have around 32 amazing women, aged 17 to 81, from Scotland, England, Ireland, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Ukraine, and Kenya.

      • We’re a meat-free and alcohol-free café, creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all.
      When do I volunteer?
      Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowDown Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowUp
      • We ask our amazing women volunteers to commit to at least one shift per week. Some volunteers do one shift a week, while others pick up a few, depending on what works for them.

      • Shifts are available on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday between 9am – 5pm.

      • You can pick a regular weekly slot or mix it up each week—our rota is flexible and changes weekly!

      • No need to do a full day—our shifts are just 2 - 4 hours long.

      • We’ve found that regular volunteering is the best way to build confidence and skills, and we’re here to support you along the way!
What benefits do I get from volunteering?
      Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowDown Icon_VolunteerFAQArrowUp
      • Join a supportive community of women from around the world, with social events to meet new people and build friendships.

      • Gain training and development that could help with future employment—many of our past volunteers have gone on to work in hospitality and beyond!

      • Build self-confidence and self-esteem in a welcoming and encouraging environment.

      • Access our 8-week employability programme (90 minutes per week), covering CV building, presentation skills, interview prep, and more, delivered by one of our corporate partners.

      • From 2025, some volunteers will have access to counselling, coaching, and psychotherapy support through a professional and confidential external service.

      • And of course—you get to enjoy our delicious bakes, drinks, and food!
